Federal Member for Berowra, Julian Leeser MP, brought David Littleproud MP, Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources out to the Hawkesbury River to meet local oyster farmers.

Mr Leeser & Mr Littleproud met with representatives from the Hawkesbury oyster industry, went out on the river to inspect an oyster farm and then sampled local oysters at the Hawkesbury Oyster Depot.

“The Hawkesbury Oyster farmers have been doing it tough for several years now”, said Mr Leeser.  “It was fantastic to bring the Minister for Agriculture out to the Hawkesbury to show him what a strong group of people this is and the great potential their industry has.”

The Hawkesbury oyster industry has been devastated by disease over the past decade but is working hard to develop and introduce disease resistant oysters back to the Hawkesbury.

“Hawkesbury River oysters are an iconic delicacy that we should all be extremely proud of”, said Mr Leeser.  “We are blessed with a beautiful local environment that produces delicious oysters, right on the doorstep of the Sydney market.  I fully support our local oyster farmers as they rebuild their industry.”
