The Minister for Water Resources, Drought, Rural Finance, Natural Disaster and Emergency Management, David Littleproud MP, visited the Berowra electorate to speak at a forum hosted by Julian Leeser MP on the drought.
Australia’s rural communities are the backbone of our country. They feed our communities and drive our economy forward. All Australians, whether they live in the city, country or suburbs are deeply concerned about the impact the drought is having on rural communities and those who live and work in them.
The drought we are experiencing is the worst in living memory. There is growing concern for our farmers and regional communities who are doing it tough, and conditions are likely to deteriorate going into summer. As an electorate with a significant regional component, people in Berowra understand the significant effect of the drought.
The Australian Government is investing more than $7 billion in a national drought strategy to support farmers now, and to also prepare for future droughts, through the Future Drought Fund.
Minister Littleproud said that it is important to understand the complexity of the drought, and what the government is doing about it.
“We are not only helping farmers’ put food on the table, but also supporting small businesses, to keep money flowing through those communities. It’s also about building infrastructure to build the drought resilience into the future.”
Julian Leeser MP said, “Many constituents have written to me expressing their concerns about the drought and our farmers. Many people in our community have also raised money and contributed to the drought effort. I wanted to provide the opportunity for the community to hear from the Minister directly.
“Minister David Littleproud MP is well known in our electorate, this is his fifth visit here. He outlined what the government is doing to provide relief to farmers and communities and responded to questions from those who attended.”
