Solar Communities Program in Cowan

A re-elected Morrison Government will help community groups in Berowra to lower their power bills and play their part in reducing Australia’s emissions by providing grants to eligible community organisations for small-scale solar and battery projects.

The $5 million Solar Communities Program forms part of the Coalition Government’s $50 million investment in the Energy Efficient Communities Program.

Under the program the Morrison Government will provide a grant of up to $12,500 to Cowan Power Cooperative for the costs of installing new solar photovoltaic panels to help reduce electricity costs.

“We know that community groups struggle under the weight of high power prices.  That’s why we’re taking strong steps to ensure they get the practical support that they need to reduce their energy use without reducing productivity”, Mr Leeser said.

Minister for the Environment the Hon Melissa Price MP said the Government was committed to helping businesses and communities to play their role in a sustainable future for the environment.

“These grants are part of the Morrison Government’s $3.5 billion Climate Solutions Package, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure we meet our 2030 climate commitments.” Minister Price said.

Under the Liberal & Nationals Government, there has been an unprecedented wave of investment in renewable energy. One in five Australian households now have solar rooftop panels, the highest per capita uptake in the world.

Grants could be used to fund new solar PV, solar hot water and battery systems. Solar systems can generate electricity during the day and the battery systems can store electricity to run lights, refrigeration and air conditioning systems into the evening.

A wide range of organisations that work hard to support our community will be eligible to apply. Examples include community‑owned kindergartens, welfare centres, Men’s Sheds, community centres, women’s associations, country fire authorities, community‑owned child care centres, community football and netball clubs, Scout or Guide groups, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community groups and surf lifesaving clubs.

Unlike Labor, the Liberal & Nationals Government is committed to tackling climate change without hiking up power bills for community groups, families and businesses and putting Australian jobs at risk.
