Platypus in the Berowra electorate

Did you know there are platypus in the Berowra electorate?!

Water samples have confirmed Australia’s most elusive creatures are in fact living in waterways throughout the Hills and Hawkesbury areas.

The project was started to determine how many platypuses live in local waterways, after locals reported numerous sightings of platypuses.

A research team from Western Sydney University and Cattai Hills Environment Network CHEN, with the help of volunteer citizen scientists and students, have been collecting water samples from catchment areas stretching from Cattai to Castle Hill.

The pilot study is being funded under the Federal Government’s Communities Environment Program, and will contribute towards the development of a conservation strategy for platypus in the region.
